The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a public health alert urging consumers to refrain from purchasing six specific ground cinnamon products after elevated levels of lead were detected in these items. The brands under scrutiny include La Fiesta, Marcum, MTCI, Swad, Supreme Tradition, and El Chilar.
A recent survey conducted by the FDA examined ground cinnamon products from discount retail stores and found alarming levels of lead and chromium in the mentioned brands. As a result, the FDA has recommended that manufacturers recall these products, with the exception of MTCI cinnamon, as efforts to reach the company have so far been unsuccessful.
In response to the FDA alert, three companies – Colonna Brothers, El Chilar Rodriguez, and Raja Foods – have voluntarily issued recalls for their ground cinnamon products. Consumer advocacy groups have commended the FDA for its diligent investigation into the matter. Nevertheless, they have also pointed out the limitations in the agency's authority to swiftly recall contaminated products in cases where manufacturers do not cooperate.
Lead exposure, especially over an extended period, can lead to severe health consequences such as neurological and cognitive disabilities, kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects. Of particular concern is the potential impact on infants and children, as lead exposure can have detrimental neurological effects on young individuals.
As a precautionary measure, the public is strongly advised to examine their spice racks and discard any ground cinnamon products from the aforementioned brands. By doing so, consumers can protect themselves and their families from the potential risks associated with lead contamination in these products.
